UPDATE: Body found in city; case probed as homicide
Man did not live in unit where he was found

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

By DEBBIE HALL - Bulletin Staff Writer

Police are treating the case of a body found inside an apartment in Martinsville this morning as a homicide, according to Police Capt. Eddie Cassady.

Authorities were summoned to the scene and at 7:56 Tuesday, they found the body of a black male in the kitchen area of Apartment 1 at 106 Moss St., Cassady said.

“We are treating this as a homicide and we are working this as a homicide,” he said.

The man has not yet been identified, and Cassady said a cause of death has not been determined.

The man did not live in the apartment where he was found, according to a city police news release.

Slightly before noon Tuesday, police at the scene were executing a search warrant and collecting evidence.

Some investigators wore protective coverings over their shoes while others retrieved various items from their vehicles to process the scene.

Still other investigators canvassed the neighborhood, “talking to as many people as we can,” Cassady said.

Cassady said there are three or four apartments in the gray-colored house with peeling paint.

The body had not been moved by late-morning, he said. When removed, it will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy, Cassady said.

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Martinsville Police Department at 638-8751 or Crime Stoppers, 63CRIME.
