A Bassett man died Monday when his truck went off a road and overturned, according to police.

Randall Leon Smith, 53, of Bassett, was driving a 2003 Mazda B4000 southbound on Blackberry Road near its intersection with Crestview Drive when the accident occurred about 12:57 p.m. Monday, according to a news release issued Monday night by the state police and Sgt. Robert Carpentieri of the state police.

The release stated that the vehicle ran off the right side of Blackberry Road, over-corrected and ran off the left side of the road. The Mazda traveled down an embankment and overturned, the release added.

Rodney Howell, Henry County fire marshal, said at the scene Monday that the vehicle flipped over into a creek.

Smith was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, and he was pronounced dead a short time later at the scene, the release stated. It added that no further information was available and the investigation was continuing.

Howell said Bassett Fire Department, Henry County Public Safety, Stone Ambulance, the state police and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident.
