Sales tax holiday in effect

Friday, August 3, 2012

Virginia’s annual sales tax holiday on clothing and school supplies starts today and continues through Sunday.

According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax.

Retailers may choose to absorb the tax on other items they sell during the holiday period, but they will be responsible for paying the tax on those items to the state tax department, officials said.

For more information on the tax holiday, including a list of items that qualify for the exemption, visit www.tax.virginia.gov.

Local merchants have said they expect their stores will be busy during the weekend.
