Woodson Smith of Martinsville finished in a tie for fifth place following the first round of the Virginia State Golf Association Youth Championship on Wednesday at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.

Smith, playing in the 12- and 13-year-old age division, fired a 3-over 75 on the 5,543-yard course, five strokes off the pace of Lynchburg’s Connor Burgess.

Smith was in a tie for first following the front nine with a score of 37 before finishing the back nine in 38 strokes.

Woodson with tee off at 9:10 a.m. today in the event’s second and final round.

FCMS softball

tryouts next week

Tryouts for the Fiedale-Collinsville Middle School softball team will be held August 15-16 on the FC baseball field after school.

Prospective athletes should up for tryouts with a glove and cleats.

Participants must have an updated physical form turned into the FCMS office before they are eligible to try out, and all students participating need to have their parents or guardians read, sign and turn in the concussion guideline form prior to tryouts.

Concussions forms should be turned into the school office with the physical forms.

Travel baseball tryouts

set for Friday and Saturday

The Franklin County Eagles, a 11U/12U travel baseball team based out of Rocky Mount, will hold tryouts for advanced baseball players Friday from 6-8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

The team is looking to fill several spots for the 2012-13 season, and tryouts are open to players who will not turn 13 years old before May 1, 2013. According to a release from the team, players with catching and pitching experience will be valued.

Registration will be held before both tryout sessions on the Benjamin Franklin Middle School softball field. Attending both sessions is not required to make the team.
