Tuesday, August 14, 2012
By PAUL COLLINS - Bulletin Staff Writer
A job fair Wednesday for former MasterBrand Cabinets employees and the public has grown to be one of largest in years.
Now 40 employers from the region are participating, and just more than 300 positions are available, according to Amanda Witt, president of Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce.
“In my opinion, this is huge,” Witt said. She added that the largest job fair she is aware of in recent years had 27 employers.
The number of employers participating had jumped from 15 as of Aug. 7 and from more than 25 as of Thursday. At the time Thursday, at least 150 manufacturing jobs were available.
Employers at Wednesday’s job fair will include Rowe Furniture, Springs Global, Monogram, Drake Extrusion, Laminate Technologies (LamTech), Essel Propack, Nationwide Homes, The Results Group, Yorktowne Cabinetry, AC Furniture, AmeriStaff, Unique Industries, Debbie’s Staffing, Bassett Furniture, Southern Finishing, Unarco, Blue Ridge Fiberboard, Fanueil, RTI, Aerotech, Shenandoah Furniture, Spencer Group Real Estate, Kimball Hospitality, Ply Gem Windows, Staff Masters, Kimbanet, ICF, Angler’s Choice, Georgia Pacific, Quickcrete and Virginia Glass Products.
Positions and departments include: construction laborers, project coordinators, network technicians, sprayers, finishers, furniture repair, upholsterers/sewers, forklift drivers/CDL drivers, assembly workers, sanders, packaging/shipping, order fulfillment, CNC (computer numeric control), industrial maintenance, customer service, accounting, engineering, trainer, quality specialists and supervisors/lead persons.
The job fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the National Guard Armory at 315 Commonwealth Blvd. The first two hours will be only for those losing jobs with MasterBrand Cabinets, and the next two hours will be for the public, officials have said.
“... We ask that they bring résumés, dress to impress, and no children, please,” Witt stated in an email. “Some folks will want to interview on the spot.”
Laura Buchanan, business services manager for the chamber, said representatives of Patrick Henry Community College, New College Institute and National College will be available at the job fair to discuss their programs.
