Friday night football: Magna Vista knocks off William Fleming, 14-6
Also: Jefferson Forest uses fourth-quarter TD to beat Bassett, late TD lifts Gretna over Tunstall

Friday, September 7, 2012

By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -

Bryce Hankins returned a kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown, Calin Jamison scrambled 47 yards for a touchdown, and Magna Vista High School knocked off William Fleming 14-6 Friday in Ridgeway.

All three scores in the game came on big plays. WFHS running back Diamond Shorter scampered 51 yards in the second quarter to give William Fleming a 6-0 lead. Colonels kicker Joel Ugochukwu missed the extra point wide right.

The Colonels (0-3) didn’t hold that advantage long. On the ensuing kickoff, Hankins ran back the kickoff for a touchdown to give the Warriors (2-1) the lead for good.

Despite good field position at times for both teams, both defenses held pretty strong. Jamison’s big run was one of the few big plays from scrimmage beyond 10 yards, and it was the only one that impacted the scoreboard.

Magna Vista hits the road next week to take on Franklin County, who lost Friday 31-24 to Salem in overtime.

Elsewhere in the Piedmont District, Jefferson Forest (3-0) scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to defeat Bassett (1-2) 19-15, and Floyd County (3-0) jumped out to a 21-0 lead against Patrick County (0-2) en route to a 49-6 victory.

Bassett led Jefferson Forest 15-6 midway through the second quarter, but JFHS cut into that deficit with a TD just before the half and added another score late to take the win.

The Bengals did not score in the second half.

In Dry Fork, Gretna scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to take a 17-14 lead on Tunstall (1-2), and the Trojans couldn't answer as the defending state champions held on for the win. The Trojans held a 7-0 lead in that game before Gretna rattled off 10 unanswered points. THS added a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to retake the lead, but Gretna answered back with a score of their own.

Check Sunday's paper for more on Friday's games.
