BREAKING NEWS: Tobacco commission OKs $5M for NCI
Funds will go toward new building in uptown
Thursday, September 27, 2012
The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission voted today to award $5 million to the New College Foundation for construction of a new building in uptown Martinsville, according to Leanna Blevins of the New College Institute.
The tobacco commission funding was essential for the New College Foundation to receive a pledge of up to $8 million from the Harvest Foundation for the building.
The New College Foundation still must raise at least $1.5 million for the building under the terms of the Harvest pledge.
That pledge was announced Tuesday on the Baldwin Block in uptown, which is the site for the new building.
Ground could be broken for the project in November, with construction possibly starting in the spring, NCI Executive Director William Wampler said Tuesday.
