Indictments unsealed
Twenty-seven people named

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Twenty-seven people were named in indictments unsealed Friday, nearly two weeks after the indictments were issued by a Henry County grand jury.

The grand jury met Sept. 17 and issued 230 indictments, including 181 that were sealed to improve the ability of police to find and arrest the defendants and to reduce the risk of witness intimidation, according to a court record allowing them to be sealed.

According to the order, the indictments were to remain closed until arrests were made or 5 p.m. Friday, whichever came first.

Forty of the people named in the sealed indictments have been arrested since the grand jury met. The rest are named in the indictments unsealed Friday.

An indictment is not an indication of guilt. It is a grand jury’s determination that enough evidence exists to warrant a trial.
