Friday night scores: Magna Vista opens with win against PCHS
Tunstall handles Bassett in 44-23 win

Friday, October 5, 2012

By FROM BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -

The Patrick County football team had a difficult time containing Magna Vista in all three phases of Friday night’s Piedmont District opener for both teams. In fact, the Warriors were able to score touchdowns offensively, defensively and on special teams.

Behind 42 first-half points, Magna Vista (5-2, 1-0 Piedmont District) cruised to a dominating 56-0 victory over Patrick County. The Warriors were able to score four times in a span of 7:09 in the second quarter, which included a punt return and fumble return for scores and two scoring runs of 35 yards or more.

Calin Jamison ran for touchdowns of 3 and 40 yards, respectively, while freshman backup quarterback Traveon Redd also ran for two scores, and Brent Hankins returned a punt for 68 yards late in the first half on top of ripping off a 49-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Jamison finished with 115 yards on five carries, and freshman running back Jacquez Hairston also 74 yards on five touches. Defensively, Magna Vista forced four turnovers, had seven sacks and 16 tackles for loss.

Tunstall moves past Bassett 44-23

Jacob Barnette ran for 201 yards on 34 carries, quarterback Chris Buckner completed 9-of-13 passes for 124 yards, and the Tunstall Trojans opened district play with a 44-23 win on the road against Bassett.

Tunstall (3-2, 1-0 Piedmont District) forced a punt on Bassett’s first possession, then took the lead with a field goal. The Trojans would never look back, scoring 30-first half points and holding Bassett to one first down and 84 total yards in the first half.

Buckner, wasn’t touched in the backfield all night as the Trojan offensive line dominated the game and also helped Tunstall grab 248 total rushing yards.

Bassett (1-6, 0-1) scored eight points in the first half on a 71-yard rush from Eddie Bowman. The Bengals tacked on a few more touchdowns, but it wouldn’t matter as the BHS defense was unable to stop Tunstall’s offense. The Trojans scored on every drive until Buckner threw an interception with 2:48 remaining in the third quarter.
