RTI International Metals Inc. produced its first certified commercial product at its Martinsville titanium plant today.
Before a host of company and state officials, state legislators and congressmen, commercial production began at the plant that first was announced in January 2008.
Present were Gov. Bob McDonnell, RTI CEO Dawne Hickton, Airbus Senior Vice President Eric Zanin and others. After the officials and legislators toured the operation, Hickton, McDonnell and Zanin addressed a crowd of local officials and others at the plant site in the Patriot Centre Industrial park.
RTI has invested $135 million in the plant that now employs 25 people, Hickton said. She thanked McDonnell and other state and local officials for their assistance in reaching Thursday’s milestone, and also praised RTI’s strong relationship with Airbus.
Zanin told the crowd that Thursday, Airbus was ordering 2,500 tons of titanium that will be processed in Martinsville.
