RICHMOND (AP) — Former Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe, who unsuccessfully sought his party’s nomination for governor of Virginia in 2009, announced Thursday that he will try again next year.

“I want to be straightforward with you: I plan on running for governor of Virginia in 2013,” McAuliffe wrote in a mass email to supporters.

McAuliffe finished second to state Sen. Creigh Deeds in a three-way race for the party’s nomination in 2009. Deeds lost to Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell in the general election.

McAuliffe’s announcement came as no surprise. He previously had acknowledged plans to run, and he noted in his email that he has attended more than 2,400 meetings and events across Virginia over the last four years.

“It is absolutely clear to me that Virginians want their next governor to focus on job creation and common sense fiscal responsibility instead of divisive partisan issues,” he wrote.

McAuliffe, a former top adviser to former President Bill Clinton and his wife, now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is the first Democrat to announce his bid for governor.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, a former governor, has not ruled out seeking his old job and has said he will announce his plans by Thanksgiving.

The Democratic nominee will face either Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling or Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who are seeking the Republican nomination
