Christmas parade starts at 5 p.m. Saturday
Friday, November 16, 2012
The Martinsville Henry County Christmas Parade will ring in the holidays on Saturday.
This year’s theme is “A Rock ’n’ Roll Christmas.” The parade will begin at 5 p.m. in uptown Martinsville.
Around 130 entries will pass through the uptown area and follow the same route as in years past, according to Jeanne Lawson, president of the Martinsville Henry County Christmas Parade Association.
Entries are welcome to do a float fitting the “Rock ’n’ Roll Christmas” theme, although it is not required.
The entries will include “everything from horses, churches, Macaroni Kid, antique cars, beauty queens, marching bands and, of course, Santa,” Lawson said.
The grand marshals of the parade will be members of The Rogues and The Generals, two celebrated local bands that formed in the 1960s.
Representing The Rogues will be Jim Stone, Pat Haley, Mark Anthony, Wayne Lovell and Nelson Edwards. The Generals will be represented by Ron Ashworth and Fairy Ashworth Coleman.
The parade will end with Santa Claus riding a professional float sponsored by the city of Martinsville.
The parade will begin at the corner of Church and Clay streets. It will turn right onto Clay, left onto Main, right onto Bridge, left onto Fayette, left onto Moss and left onto Church, where it will end at the intersection with Ellsworth Street.
“We are hoping to have very nice weather,” Lawson said. “I understand there is a chance of rain, but hopefully that will hold off” until after the parade.
Just in case, a rain date is set for at 4 p.m. Sunday.
