America should repent
Sunday, November 18, 2012
Recent letters and syndicated column articles have prompted me to write this letter. I’ve been disillusioned that religious leaders have failed to address the issue head on.
Cokie and Steven Roberts began their column, “It is time for truth,” with this statement: “Both presidential candidates failed to tell the truth about the biggest issues facing the country: spending, taxes and deficits.” More recently, Mary Alice Sherrard wrote ( “Faith is reaffirmed,” Nov. 11), “May you (God) guide them to consensus solutions to our very real problems.”
What Roberts calls “the biggest issues” and Sherrard calls “very real problems” are actually symptoms of the one true problem in our nation. Yes, it is singular, a problem. History records that nations, such as Israel and even the might Roman Empire, which rejected God have been relegated to becoming substandard nations and/or being subject to persecution.
As Benjamin Franklin observed in his speech to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on June 28, 1787: “God governs in the affairs of men” (Romans 13). When nations are obedient to him, they prosper; when they aren’t, they deteriorate.
Since in the last few generations our nation, the greatest ever, has been consistently and increasingly leaving God out of consideration, he is turning his back on the nation. The solution is simple: America, repent. Enthrone God in your hearts, and let him solve our problem(s).
