Editorial: Tile Shop growth is good news
Sunday, December 2, 2012
Henry County got some good news with last week’s announcement that the Tile Shop is expanding in the Axton area.
The Minnesota-based company opened a warehouse distribution center here in January 2011 with 25 employees. Now, it is adding a 30,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in a $4 million investment that has no local or state incentives, grants or Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission funds.
The company manufactures and sells stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles and tiling materials. The new facility will enable it to make mortar, grout and sealers to better serve its 20 retail locations and more stores that could be added in the future, officials said.
For now, the work will be done by the company’s current workforce of 25 people, but officials did not rule out that more employees could be added later.
County Administrator Tim Hall said last week that Tile Shop Site Manager Mike Garrison has frequently expressed his pleasure with the county’s workforce and business community when Hall has made site visits. Hall said that was part of the company’s decision to build on its existing site.
Officials often have said Henry County is a good place to do business, and it is good to hear that from a local company. We hope other businesses take note of it and look to this area when they consider locating or expanding.
