Advisory urges caution if roads icy
Monday, January 28, 2013
As a result of icy weather expected today, Henry County, Martinsville and Patrick County public schools and Carlisle School are on a two-hour delay schedule.
Patrick Henry Community College will open at 10 a.m.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued a freezing rain advisory and hazardous weather outlook Sunday that will last until 10 a.m. today.
According to the service’s website, an upper level disturbance was set to “pass across the area bringing warmer air aloft and light rain into the area.”
With surface temperatures expected to fall below freezing, the service said periods of freezing rain were possible.
Accumulations were expected to range from a glazing across northern North Carolina and southside Virginia, to around 1?10-inch or more over southeast West Virginia and the Virginia highlands, according to the service site.
The Virginia Department of Transportation issued a warning urging motorists to adjust their travel plans around the weather today.
VDOT urged motorists to use caution if driving in icy conditions, especially on bridges, ramps, overpasses, higher elevations and shady spots where ice may form first.
