BREAKING NEWS: Federal charge filed in U.Va.-Wise incident
Monday, January 28, 2013
By BULLETIN AND AP REPORTS -
A former Martinsville resident is facing a federal charge in connection with an incident last week at the University of Virginia at Wise.
Bryant Alexander Hairston, 20, was charged in a criminal complaint with knowingly making false, fictitious and fraudulent statements and representations, according to The Associated Press.
Federal authorities filed the complaint Monday in U.S. District Court in Abingdon, the AP reported.
The university’s police department charged the former Martinsville resident last week with falsely summoning law enforcement officials, a misdemeanor.
That charge came after a call was placed to 911 shortly before 9 p.m. on Jan. 23 to report that a gunman had been seen on campus, officials said at the time.
The university was locked down for about two hours, as officers from various law enforcement agencies searched buildings and grounds for a gunman, university officials have said. No gunman was found, officials said.
