Veterans are the best

My letter is in response to Michael Bestler’s letter regarding women being allowed combat roles in the military. Bestler says the war needs to be for men that nature has made to be dumb.
I pass Arlington National Cemetery twice a day and look at the tens of thousands of graves of American military people who made a decision to defend our country. I look at my father and other people’s fathers who were shot up and killed defending this country. I have been to Bedford, where so many of one town’s men were killed defending this country, and for someone to say that nature made them dumb is beyond me.
One of the smartest people I ever met was my old man. He got shot up defending our country, as many of you reading this have family members who did the same. I will guarantee you my father was not dumb, nor are those people in the graves that I pass every day at Arlington National Cemetery. Dumb, no, anything but. They are the best we got.
In summation, thanks to all veterans and their families. All of you sacrificed a lot, some of you sacrificed all. Rest assured, the vast majority of Americans know “you are the best we got.”
