Keep filling the glass
Wednesday, February 6, 2013
When I recently read a couple of letters on the Opinion Page in the Bulletin about how depressed the uptown area of Martinsville is, I thought of how differently people perceive situations. Yes, uptown does have empty buildings, but it also has a number of unique stores and restaurants and many offices. It is like seeing uptown as a glass of water. You can see it as half empty or half full. If people visit uptown, they can see what is in those occupied buildings. By patronizing the businesses that are here, it would encourage more businesses to fill those empty buildings.
Recycling is the buzz word these days. Restoring well-built buildings that have stood the test of time is the ultimate recycling. It helps to save the natural resources that are needed for building materials and the fuel to transport those materials for new buildings. If these old buildings are not restored, they either become a blight or are demolished and fill our landfills. Many of our older buildings have unique characteristics that cannot be easily duplicated. They are the heart and soul of our community. Let’s keep filling that glass.
