Teach about texting
Friday, February 15, 2013
This is in reference to the article in the Feb. 11 Bulletin on (proposed) texting law changes. We have the educational systems (K-12) available to teach young adults the facts of life, but do they listen? Did we listen when we were their ages? Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous distractions in today’s world. Too many young adults are losing their lives trying to be cool. Too many vehicles on the roads. Just too many ... ways to die.
I believe our young people would be more receptive to these types of facts from teachers and educators than their parents or grandparents. There are many avenues in the educational system to use and to teach our young people, making it possible for them to live a full life. With the right tools we, as adults, can make a difference in their lives. Let’s make a difference. I know when I was much younger, I didn’t read the newspapers, I didn’t listen to the TV — why would they? But you have to listen in schools.
Sometimes you just need to choose the right available methods to get the information to the right audiences, in this case our young people who are using the texting technology. Families should not have to go through the loss of a child or loved one because of texting while driving. To those young adults reading this article — we are only humans; tragedies do happen.
