BREAKING NEWS: Chief deputy pleads guilty to DWI
Hopkins is being demoted, sheriff says
Tuesday, February 19, 2013
By MICKEY POWELL - Bulletin Staff Writer
The chief deputy at the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office is being demoted after she pleaded guilty Tuesday to a charge of driving while impaired (DWI) in North Carolina.
Laura Hopkins will continue working for the sheriff’s office but she has been removed as chief deputy, said city Sheriff Steve Draper.
Draper said Hopkins will lose her rank of major, but he has not yet decided what her new rank will be as other disciplinary measures against her are pending.
According to Draper, Hopkins on Tuesday pled guilty to a DWI charge — it is basically the same as a driving under the influence (DUI) charge in Virginia — in Rockingham County District Court in North Carolina.
Hopkins was sentenced to 24 hours of community service and her privilege to drive in North Carolina was suspended for 12 months, Draper said. She also was fined $100 and court costs, he said.
Further details will be reported in the Martinsville Bulletin on Wednesday.
