Patrick County’s softball team beat Chatham 8-5 and improved to 2-2 with the win on Wednesday in Stuart.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Beth Williams, Julia Hutchens, and Natalie Mitchell each went 3-4. Williams had three runs, a double, and RBI. Hutchens had a double and two RBIs. Brandi Woods went 2-3 with a walk, a double, and RBI.
Mitchell got the win in the circle. She threw all seven innings with two strike outs, two walks, allowed eight hits and four runs were earned.
Dan River 10
Magna Vista 5
Magna Vista lost a softball game to Dan River 10-5 on Wednesday in Ridgeway. The Warriors were down 10-1 in the fifth inning and scored four runs to close the gap.
Magna Vista gave up six runs in the third inning (two earned). For the game, the Warriors (1-2) had five errors.
Jasmine Agee pitched all seven innings, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits. She had one strikeout. Hannah Savedge had two hits with a double and scored two runs. McKala Jarrell had two hits and scored a run, and Maegan Sutphin had a base hit with two RBIs.
Magna Vista will play Patrick Henry at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Botetourt Bash tournament in Daleville. MVHS will play at least two games Saturday at the tournament.
Cougars pick up first win of season
The Patrick County baseball team picked up its first win of the season against Chatham Wednesday evening in Stuart.
The Cougars scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning on a walk by Carson Clifton to score Chase Barnes. Chatham took an early lead, but the Cougars answered a double from Patrick Turner that scored two runs. Patrick County scored five more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, led by doubles by Tyler Dalton and Chase Barnes and Carson Clifton and a single by Nick Dalton.
Chatham tied the game in the top of the 7th inning, but the Cougars closed it in the bottom of the inning. Patrick County was led at the plate by Barnes and Dalton. Each recorded two hits, and Hutchens was 3-for-3.
Dan River 7
Magna Vista 0
Dan River beat Magna Vista’s baseball team 7-0 on Wednesday in Ridgeway. Matt Compton picked up the loss for the Warriors, giving up seven runs on seven hits.
Dan River scored six runs in the first inning and one in the third.
Magna had three hits in the game. Cameron Brummitt had two singles and was 2-for-3. Holden Watkins had a double.
The Warriors (0-3) will play next against William Fleming at 5 p.m. on Friday in Ridgeway.
Magna Vista 6
Dan River 0
Koby Johnson had 11 saves in goal and an assist and the Hankins twins scored five goals as Magna Vista’s soccer team defeated Dan River 6-0 on Wednesday in Martinsville.
Johnson’s assist was kicked off the first bounce from his punt by Brent Hankins — who finished the game with a hat trick. Bryce Hankins had two goals. Josh Warren scored the other goal for the Warriors (2-1) and had an assist. Eden Gonzalez had two assists.
The Warriors will play William Fleming on Friday at the Smith River Sports Complex in Martinsville.
Franklin County 2
The Bengals went into halftime tied with Franklin County, but gave up two quick goals to start the second half in a 2-0 road loss to FCHS on Wednesday.
Misael Sanchez was given a red card in the 24th minute putting the Bengals (1-2) down a man for the remainder of the game. Bassett head coach Larry Wylie also said the team lost James Craig in 32nd minute for the remainder of the game to hamstring injury.
Franklin County scored in the 42nd minute and the 47th minute.
BHS goalkeeper Lucas Draper six saves on eight FCHS shots.
Bassett had five shots on goal and hit the post twice.
The Bengals will travel to play Christiansburg on Friday.
Bassett (J.V.) 1
Franklin County 0
The Bassett boys junior varsity soccer team beat Franklin County 1-0 on Wednesday. Jacob Porter scored for the Bengals and was assisted by Nick Foley. Jonathan Hummer had eight saves in the shutout.
Bassett’s record is 1-0-1. The Bengals will play Christiansburg on Friday
Franklin County 2
Franklin County controlled possession for most of the game against Bassett and ultimately beat the Bengals 2-1 on Wednesday in Bassett.
FCHS scored in the 39th and 60th minutes, and Bassett’s Nicole Shelton scored on a free kick 78th minute.
The Bengals’ goalkeeper, Alvalous Barbour, had 18 saves in net. Bassett (2-1) was outshot 20-5 in the game.
Bassett will travel to play Franklin County on Monday.

Martinsville’s girls tennis team beat Halifax County 8-1 on Wednesday in South Boston, only losing one singles match.

SRSC holding last
On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Smith River Sports Complex is holding its last open registration for T-Ball.
Sign-ups are at the concession stand.
The SRSC will accept registrations until March 31. The form can also be downloaded from the SRSC’s website and turned into the complex.
Ogden hits hole
in one at Beaver Hills
Sonny Ogden aced the 15th hole at Beaver Hills Golf Course on March 11.
Ogden used a 9-iron to hit the hole-in-one on the par-3, 135-yard hole. Witnessing the shot were Bill Teegen, Nelson Redd and Richard Booth.

Frank Newman hit a hole in one on the par-3, 154-yard 3rd hole at Beaver Hills Golf Course with his 5-wood.
The shot was witnessed by Gary Ramsey and Marty Lugar.

Martinsville’s junior varsity baseball team defeated Hargrave Military Academy 16-3 on Tuesday night.
Aaron Martin was the winning pitcher, throwing four innings and striking out six. Josh Adams recorded the save and struckout three.
The Bulldogs were led offensively by Xzavier Johnson who had three doubles and seven RBIs. Logan Heater had 2 singles.
