Police capture fugitive hiding in closet
Man had been wanted since last May

Thursday, March 28, 2013

A tip led police to a Ridgeway apartment where they found a man who had been at large for nearly a year, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Derrick Antonio Hunt, 25, 640 Hobson Road, Axton, allegedly was found hiding in a closet during a search of an apartment in the Richwood Circle Apartments off Joseph Martin Highway, according to a sheriff’s office news release and Maj. Ricky Walker.

Walker said police went to the apartment after receiving information that Hunt may have been there. Another man was present when officers arrived, Walker said, but he did not have any information on that person and said no one else was charged.

When officers found the man in the closet, he allegedly initially gave two separate identities, the release stated. Hunt was identified with help from the Martinsville Police Department, the release added.

Hunt faces outstanding charges in Henry County of felonious assault, robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, the release stated.

Walker did not have details on those charges, except to say they stemmed from an incident about the same time as the city’s charges.

Martinsville Police Chief Mike Rogers said Tuesday that Hunt was stopped by officers May 7 for allegedly disregarding emergency equipment and driving in the opposite lane of travel. When asked to exit the vehicle, he allegedly took a small plastic bag from his pocket and threw it in a ditch before fleeing on foot, Rogers said.

Hunt allegedly ran for about 75 yards before being caught and arrested, Rogers said. A search of the vehicle he was driving revealed a handgun with the serial number removed, and the plastic bag which was recovered contained “off-color white rocks” which later were tested and revealed to be cocaine, Rogers said.

Hunt also was charged in connection with an incident Nov. 9 in the 1300 block of Cardinal Lane in which a resident of the home reported that he had been shot. The victim told police that he allegedly had been approached by a man who demanded money, Rogers said. The victim refused and allegedly was shot in the lower back as he fled, Rogers said.

Hunt’s charges in Martinsville include malicious wounding, attempted robbery, use of firearm in the commission of a felony, discharge firearm in a public place, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of Schedule II drug, possession of firearm while in possession of Schedule II drug, possession of firearm with a removed serial number, probation violation and failure to appear, according to the release.

In addition to the outstanding charges, Hunt was charged with giving false identity to law enforcement in Henry County, the release stated.

“It sounds like the long arm of the law finally got him,” Rogers said.

Hunt is being held in the Henry County Jail with no bond.

Walker said Hunt will have court appearances in both Henry County and Martinsville, and the court that sets the first hearing date will try him first.

Anyone with information about these charges is asked to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 638-8751 or the Crimestoppers Program at 632-7463.

The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards up to $1,000 for information related to crime. The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determine the amount of reward paid.
