UPDATE: Tornado watch lifted

Friday, April 19, 2013

The National Weather Service has lifted a tornado watch that had been issued for Henry County, Martinsville and the surrounding area today.

A tornado watch means weather conditions are favorable for tornadoes to occur.

The watch was lifted after an afternoon storm swept through the area. Trees were reported down in several areas.

A tornado warning means radar shows significant rotation in storm clouds or a funnel cloud has been sighted, even if the funnel is not reaching the ground. Seek shelter immediately if a warning is issued.

The best shelter is underground, such as a basement. Interior rooms, closets or halls with no windows are also suitable shelter. If possible, after going to a shelter area, get under a sturdy piece of furniture, such as a table or desk, for protection from flying debris or collapsed roofs.

Stay away from windows during a tornado so as not to come into contact with broken glass or other debris being blown around.
