BREAKING NEWS: Truck carrying turkeys wrecks

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

A truck carrying turkeys headed for slaughter wrecked on U.S. 220 early Wednesday.

The accident caused the closing of one lane of traffic in the northbound lane above Bassett Forks.

The truck landed on its side in the single-vehicle accident.

Late this morning, the turkeys were being removed from the scene. Some of the cages landed in a stream area off the highway.

Information on how many turkeys were involved and their conditions was not available at mid-morning.

The turkeys were from Circle S Ranch in Monroe, N.C., and they were being transported by Gerald Clountz Trucking of Midland, N.C.

The accident is being investigated by the Virginia State Police.
