Few have filed for offices

Monday, May 20, 2013

Only a handful of candidates have filed for local offices in Henry and Patrick counties, according to registrars in both localities.

Henry County Registrar Elizabeth Stone said last week only three people have filed — one for the Henry County Board of Supervisors and two for seats on the Henry County School Board.

Incumbent Blackberry District Supervisor Jim Adams announced Saturday that he has filed paperwork to run for his fourth consecutive term.

Incumbent Collinsville District Supervisor Joe Bryant has filed to seek a second term, Stone said.

Incumbent Blackberry District Supervisor Jim Adams announced Saturday that he has filed paperwork to run for his fourth consecutive term.

Michael Hooper, a newcomer, has filed for the Blackberry District seat on the Henry County School Board, Stone said.

Incumbent Curtis Millner also has filed to seek re-election to his Iriswood District seat on the school board, she added.

Rudy Law said earlier this year that he would not seek reelection to the Blackberry seat.

No one has filed yet for the Collinsville seat on the school board, after incumbent Kathy Rogers announced that she would not seek re-election.

“Those are the only three candidates that have filed,” Stone said, and added others have picked up packets to file, but “we do not keep a record of those people.”

Since packets also are available at the State Board of Elections website, Stone said “I don’t know who may be out” collecting the 125 needed signatures to run.

“The only thing I do know is I wish they would hurry up and file,” Stone said.

Although the deadline to file is 7 p.m. on June 11, Stone said that both parties also have primaries that day.

“The next day after the primary and the whole week after is a big week for us” with canvassing, certifying “the primaries and so forth,” Stone said.

Candidates with signatures to verify and other checks that are needed before they can be certified will add to what Stone said she anticipates will be an already heavy workload.

“When we certify them, we have to check all the petitions, put all the information in the computer and then certify that they have filed everything they needed to file to be a candidate,” she said.

Hopefuls need signatures of “at least 125 qualified voters in their district,” Stone said. When getting petitions signed, she recommends collecting more than that number to offset any who may not be registered or registered in a different district.

Stone also encourages candidates to file as early as possible.

“Any person that feels like they want to be on the school board or board of supervisors, I would just like for them to just come on in and file so that we can certify them” in advance of the primary, Stone said.

Candidates also are few so far in Patrick County, according to Susan Taylor, registrar.

Crystal Harris is seeking another term as the Smith River District representative on the Patrick County Board of Supervisors, while incumbent Roger Hayden and political newcomer Tom Bishop are vying for the Dan River District seat, Taylor said.

As of Tuesday, no one had filed for either the Smith or the Dan River district seats on the Patrick County School Board, she said.
