Murder charged levied against Bassett man
In shooting death of wife

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -

A Bassett man was indicted Monday on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife, according to Henry County court records.

David Leon Mitchell, 64, of 224 Bittersweet Drive, Bassett, also was indicted on a charge of using a firearm in commission of felony, according to court records.

An indictment does not indicate guilt. It is a grand jury’s determination that there is enough evidence to hold a trial.

Mitchell’s wife, Linda Sue Mitchell, 57, of the same address, was found in the couple’s home Jan. 29 with a gunshot wound to the head. She died Jan. 31 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Initially, David Leon Mitchell was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in the case, both felonies, police said.

Those charges were changed Feb. 1 to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of murder.
