Friday, May 24

Motorists traveling to Bassett High School for graduation should expect delays from 5 to 9 p.m. Traffic will be controlled by the Henry County Sheriff’s office, and officers and attendants will assist with parking. Message boards will also be in place to provide directional information.

Stuart Farmers Market open from 8 a.m. until noon, with produce, beef, baked goods, etc. The Patrick County Extension Services will be available to check the seals on pressure canners (bring the lids). SNAP accepted.

Alcoholics Anonymous: noon, As Bill Sees It, Christ Episcopal Church, 311 E. Church St.; 8 p.m., Big Book Study Group, closed discussion, Church of Christ, 2115 Daniels Creek Road, Collinsville.

Saturday, May 25

Country buffet breakfast at Horsepasture Fire Department: 6-10 a.m. Adults and all carryouts, $6; children under 10, $3.

Free community meal by We H.O.P.E. (Help Other People Eat) Ministries of The Community Fellowship, from 5 to 6 p.m. at three locations: Community Fellowship, next to Sav-a-Lot in the shopping plaza, Collinsville; Open Door Baptist Church parking lot, 85 Highland St., Bassett; uptown Maratinsville at the gazebo at the corner of Depot and Franklin streets. If it is raining, only The Community Fellowship will be open.

The Upper Room Worship Center, Alabaster Box Food Bank, will be giving away free food from from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday.

Motorists traveling to Magna Vista High School graduation need to be aware of changes in traffic patterns, according to VDOT. Drivers must use Virginia 687 (Soapstone Road) to travel to the school. Virginia 688 (Lee Ford Camp Road) will be closed from 7-9 a.m. All traffic must use Soapstone Road from U.S. 220, U.S. 58 and Joseph Martin Highway. One-way traffic will be maintained on Magna Vista School Road and will be controlled by Henry County Sheriff’s Office. Message boards will be in place to provide additional information.

Confederate Memorial Service at the Grave of the Unknown Confederate Soldier at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville: 11 a.m., sponsored by the Mildred Lee chapter, UDC, and the Stuart Hairston Camp, SCV. The speaker will be the Rev. Allen Jackson.

Bassett Moose Lodge will serve breakfast and host a car show, beginning at 9 a.m. The band The Eleventh Hour will perform from 8 p.m. until midnight. The public is invited.

29th Carver Memorial Day service: 7 p.m. at Carver Memorial Gardens. The main speaker will be Warren “Sonny” Richardson, commander of American Legion Homer Dillard Post 78. Other guests will attend and presentations will be made by various organizations.

Morning Star Church Community Forum with the central focus of Morning Star Holy Church’s Outreach Ministry: 7 p.m. at the church. Topic: “Quilting for a Better Community — Visions and Next Step Strategies.”
