BREAKING NEWS: Patrick bank robbery probed
Friday, August 2, 2013
The Carter Bank in Ararat, in Patrick County, was the scene of an armed robbery Friday morning, according to the Patrick County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 9:40 a.m., a male entered the bank with his face covered, a sheriff’s office news release stated. The suspect displayed a firearm and demanded and received money from the bank employee, the release added.
An accomplice was waiting outside of the bank for the suspect and the two sped away from the scene headed toward North Carolina, the release stated.
A witness outside of the bank saw the two leave and attempted to follow the suspect vehicle, the release stated. The passenger in the suspect vehicle allegedly fired multiple shots in the direction of the witness, and the witness stopped following, the release added.
The suspect vehicle was found abandoned a short time later approximately a mile away from the bank.
Sheriff Dan Smith said the suspects did obtain a substantial amount of money but he would not elaborate as to the exact amount.
He also advised that more suspects and more vehicles are believed to be involved.
The Patrick County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Winston-Salem, N.C., Police Department, the Virginia State Police and the FBI.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Smith at (276) 692-7012 or Crimestoppers at (276) 694-5000. All information received is confidential and a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Patrick Investigators Karen Weidhaas and Brian Hubbard are leading the investigation.
