Tuesday, August 6, 2013
A Martinsville man is in critical condition after allegedly stepping off the sidewalk and into the path of an oncoming motorist Sunday, and Martinsville authorities are seeking information related to the incident.
Benjamin Wayne Grubbs, 57, of 282 Mitchell St., Martinsville, was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment of injuries he sustained after stepping off the sidewalk into the path of an oncoming vehicle Sunday night, according to Interim Martinsville Police Chief Eddie Cassady.
Authorities are hoping that anyone who may have talked to Grubbs before the incident will contact them, according to a release from the Martinsville Police Department.
He was listed in critical condition Monday night, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The incident occurred Sunday night, Cassady said.
The driver of the vehicle was traveling south in the 400 block of Liberty Street around 9:05 p.m. Sunday, the release stated.
The vehicle was “heading towards the city on Liberty Street when Mr. Grubbs stepped out into the path of travel,” Cassady said.
Grubbs initially was transported to the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County by the Martinsville Fire Department, according to the release.
He was later airlifted to the facility in Winston-Salem, N.C., Cassady said.
The driver was not injured and no charges have been filed, authorities said.
The case remains under investigation, the release stated.
Anyone with information about the incident or anyone who may have had contact with Grubbs before the incident is encouraged to contact authorities at 403-5300 or 638-8751.
