A 20-month-old toddler allegedly was struck by a vehicle operated by the child’s mother on Tuesday, according to a release from the Martinsville Police Department.
The incident occurred at 8:22 a.m. when the child, the mother and a grandmother were riding in their vehicle and stopped at a home on Pond Street, the release stated. The grandmother and the child got out of the vehicle to go into a home. The mother, who was driving the vehicle at the time, did not realize that the child was in front of the vehicle, the release added.
The child allegedly was struck by the vehicle as the mother pulled off, the release stated.
The 1-year, 8-month old toddler was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Health Brenner Children’s Hospital in North Carolina.
The toddler initially was taken to Memorial Hospital in Martinsville by its mother before police officers arrived on the scene, according to the release.
The accident remains under investigation.
