Toddler hit by car in stable condition

Thursday, August 15, 2013

The 20-month-old boy who was injured when he allegedly was struck by a vehicle Tuesday has been upgraded from critical to stable condition, according to Interim Martinsville Police Chief Eddie Cassady.

“This incident was a terrible accident,” Cassady said of the incident that occurred at 8:22 a.m. on Pond Street, near Hairston Street.

“The mother, the grandmother and the child pulled up at their house. The grandmother got out to go into the house and the child went with the grandmother” unbeknownst to the mother, who was operating the vehicle at the time, Cassady said.

“When the mother went to pull off, the child was in front of the car” and was struck, Cassady alleged.

The incident, he said, “is still under investigation, but to this point, everything in our investigation just points to the fact that this was a horrible accident,” Cassady said. “I hate that the child and the family has to go through anything like this. It’s just horrible.”
