Parts of the dock for the marina at Philpott Lake were brought in, assembled and floated into the lake on Friday.
Jeff Turton, project manager on the project, said the pieces of docks had been built separately in Henderson, N.C., and transported to Henry County.
Early Friday, workers bolted the various sized portions of dock together in anticipation of floating the dock out into the water and positioning it, Turton said.
“This is the section of the dock that the store will be located on,” Turton said. Other sections of the dock — including boat slips and the gangway — still are being constructed, he said.
“It will probably be six to eight weeks” before those portions are ready to put in the lake, he said.
However, construction of the store is expected to begin this week, Turton said.
Supervisors approved building the $1.35 million marina to provide basic amenities to Philpott Lake visitors and boost tourism — which would not only impact the surrounding area, but the county as well, county officials have said.
The project’s funding includes $785,971 from the county; $418,138 from the Harvest Foundation; and $150,000 from the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corp. (EDC). The county’s funds include $110,971 that was saved on a water line project at Commonwealth Crossing Business Centre, county officials have said.
