Editorial: Support for NCI growing
Sunday, September 22, 2013
Memorial Hospital in Martinsville on Friday became the latest local entity to show support for the new building, and the new future, being constructed by the New College Institute.
The hospital presented a $100,000 gift to the New College Foundation toward the $2 million Building on Baldwin capital campaign to help cover expenses beyond construction of the new NCI building. Construction of NCI’s first stand-alone building began in May and is expected to be completed by spring 2014.
The new building’s total cost has been estimated at $18 million. Of that, about $13.3 million is for construction, and the rest will be for modern educational equipment and furnishings.
The Building on Baldwin capital campaign was created to meet a challenge from the Harvest Foundation to raise $2 million from individuals and corporations to complete the building project.
Several local groups have stepped up to contribute, including Commonwealth Laminating & Coating Inc., which gave $100,000; Hooker Furniture, which donated $50,000, and the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County, which committed $25,000 to the campaign.
These gifts are important in creating a state-of-the-art facility. They also show the community’s support for this project and the mission of the New College. The donors recognize that NCI is a key factor in combining education with economic development and preparing students for 21st century jobs.
