Philpott Lake to close tonight
Government shutdown behind decision
Thursday, October 10, 2013
By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
Philpott Lake is closing to visitors due to the government shutdown, according to Craig “Rocky” Rockwell, operations project manager at the lake.
Rockwell said Philpott remained opened for the first days of the partial government shutdown because it had enough funding to do so. However, with those funds running out and no end to the shutdown in sight, Rockwell said, the decision was made to close.
Officials had said the lake would close Oct. 5, but they kept it open longer until they had to close it, Rockwell said.
The lake is closing to visitors effective at 8 tonight, he said. Campers will have until noon Friday to leave, he added.
The visitors center, overlook and other areas will be closed indefinitely, according to Rockwell.
The government shutdown, prompted when Congress failed to pass a spending bill over disagreements about the president’s health care law, is in its 10th day.
