Prep Football: Big third quarter pushes Magna Vista past Martinsville

Friday, October 11, 2013

The Magna Vista football blocked a pair of punts for touchdowns in Friday night's Piedmont District win against rival Martinsville.

The second one highlighted the Warriors' poise in the third quarter after what head coach Joe Favero called a sloppy first half.

The Bulldogs (2-5, 2-1 PD) were outscored 21-0 in the second half and had little answer to Magna Vista's pass rush and running game in a 35-7 loss at Dan Greene Memorial Stadium. The Warriors (5-1, 3-0) held a 14-7 lead at halftime on the strength of a blocked punt a minute and 15 seconds into the game.

After fumbling the opening kickoff, giving Martinsville great field position, Magna Vista forced a punt and then saw sophomore Jacqez Hairston go 71 yards up the middle on second-and-21 two plays later. Four plays after, Bryce Hankins got around the left edge for a three-yard scoring run.

Martinsville was on the brink of going down 28-7 but Darius Dillard picked off a Shoalin McGuire pass in the right corner of the end zone. However, like the last turnover, the Warriors defense force a three-and-out.

Tanner Adams then was able to block the punt inside the 10-yard line and scrambled to recover the ball in the end zone and put the game out of reach with 2:49 left in the third quarter.

McGuire capped the scoring 39 seconds later capitalizing off a Brandon Carter interception on a 13-yard TD run two plays later. McGuire was 9-of-15 passing for 129 yards and three interceptions. He was sacked three times and ran for just seven yards despite two rushing touchdowns.

Martinsville was held to 36 yards rushing as a team. Riggs Jordan picked up a Carter fumble on fourth-and-goal from the Magna Vista 1 and took it in to provide the Bulldogs' only points. It was the very next drive after the first blocked-punt score.

Other Piedmont District scores:

Bassett 25, Halifax County 7

G.W.-Danville 84, Patrick County 0

Franklin County 34, Pulaski County 19
