One of the nation’s largest retailers will open a store in Henry County early next year.

Tractor Supply Co. has signed a lease for the former Winn-Dixie supermarket building at the largely vacant Sheffield Square shopping center on U.S. 220 Business (Greensboro Road) south of Martinsville, according to Bill Vaughn of J & R Management, which manages the property.

Vaughn referred questions about Tractor Supply to the company.

Rob Hoskins, a spokesman for Tractor Supply, said the store tentatively is scheduled to open Feb. 8. He said the store will comprise 23,121 square feet and employ 12 to 17 people, including full-time and part-time workers.

A sign announcing that Tractor Supply is “coming soon” has been posted at the front of the shopping center property.

In an email, Hoskins said the company sought to open a local store due to the area’s large number of part-time and “hobby farmers” and horse owners.

The chain’s inventory contains “lawn and garden and animal care products that service the needs of these customers,” Hoskins wrote in the email.

Tractor Supply’s customers include full- and part-time farmers and ranchers, rural homeowners, and contractors, according to the company’s website. The company’s stores are open to the public.

Along with farm and ranch supplies, the retailer also sells clothes, footwear, hunting gear, pet supplies, paint, hardware, plumbing equipment, kitchen and food preparation equipment, and toys and games, the website shows.

With more than 1,223 stores in 47 states, Tractor Supply is the nation’s largest retailer of farm and ranch supplies, the website mentions.

The nearest stores to Henry County-Martinsville that already are open are in Danville, Rocky Mount and Eden, N.C.

According to the website stores.com, among the nation’s Top 100 retailers in 2012, Tractor Supply ranked 59th in terms of its roughly 1,085 stores as of 2011 and 81st in terms of its total sales of $4.233 million in 2011.

The company is headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn., a suburb of Nashville. LifePoint Hospitals, which operates Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, also is headquartered in Brentwood.

Tractor Supply is the second major retailer to recently announce plans to locate in the community.

Marshalls, a nationwide off-price department store chain, will open a store at Liberty Fair Mall in Martinsville at 8 a.m. today.
