Paper ballots still best

Thursday, November 14, 2013

I believe it is time that we return to paper ballots. The present electronic balloting system is controlled by a computer program. We cannot, personally, be sure that our vote goes to the candidate of our choice. A programmer is able to change or bias the program, if he chooses to. Our voting system should not be vulnerable to the power of the programmer.

A return to the paper ballot, which is submitted locally, counted locally and the counting process supervised by all of the concerned parties, is a more reliable system. We have seen times when powerful people in the government have used the government personnel to attack people who are not in agreement with their policies. This opens the possibility that those in power can use programmers to bias the votes.

In an important arena, such as putting in power those people who represent us, we should be certain that our votes are assigned to the candidates of our choice.
