Bassett High School senior linebacker Ryan Akers was named an offensive-defensive All-American while attending a football camp this summer and was invited to participate in the 8th annual Offense-Defense Bowl Week festivities taking place a the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.

Akers was selected for this honor from a group of over a thousand athletes. The All-American Showcase is part of a week-long series of events, and the all-star game showcases 88 of the top high school seniors in the country. The game has featured current NFL players Cam Newton, Carlos Dunlap and Dez Bryant.

Akers was third on the team this year in solo tackles with 63 and led the team with 40 assists. He also recovered one fumble, had one sack, and recorded four tackles for a loss.

Offense-Defense Sports has been running full-contact football instructional camps for the past 45 years, and currently operates in approximately 40 camp locations nationwide every spring and summer.



Piedmont Shootout set for this weekend

The Smith River Sports Complex will hold the Piedmont Shootout this weekend Nov. 16-17 after pushing it back from last week’s originally scheduled dates.

The Piedmont Youth Soccer League will have boys and girls teams represented in the tournament at all divisions. Action starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.


Registration for indoor soccer at Martinsville Y

The PYSL is once again fielding teams for Martinsville YMCA indoor soccer league.

The league is open to players U6-U14. There are no matches played for U6-U8. Every Tuesday night one-hour block will be conducted as a training and development session starting Nov. 19. The U9-U14 will have matches every Friday starting Nov. 22.

The cost is $45 and there is a $10 late registration fee.



Boys basketball registrations begins

Henry County Parks and Recreation are accepting registrations for their boy’s basketball program through Nov. 15.

The program is offered for boys ages 8-13 as of Oct. 1. Call 634-4640 for additional information.
