Empathy was needed

Friday, November 15, 2013

I was able to attend the performance of the musical “Purlie,” presented by the Patriot Players of Patrick Henry Community College. When the character Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee died, his death seemed to be celebrated in the presence of his son, Charlie Cotchipee. The jubilant crowd in the play seemed not to acknowledge the son’s grief and failed to show him respect during this time of mourning.

I would have preferred the play emphasize the human touch of sympathy instead of emphasizing what could be interpreted as one race of people celebrating the misfortunes of another race of people.
