One child dies, one hospitalized

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

The Martinsville Police Department is conducting an investigation after officers received a report Monday morning of two unresponsive children on Dunlap Street, according to a news release.

One of the children, a 5-year-old girl, died about an hour after officers received the call at 7:05 a.m., the release said.

The second child is 2 years old, according to the release.

When officers arrived on Dunlap Street, “The 5-year-old was unresponsive and the 2-year-old was having a medical emergency,” the release said. “The 5-year-old was pronounced dead at 8:13 a.m., and the 2-year-old was flown to Roanoke hospital.”

After a death notice was issued by Hairston Funeral Home, Interim Martinsville Police Chief Eddie Cassady confirmed the 5-year-old was AahLayah Martin. The funeral home spelled the girl’s first name ALayah.

No further information was available Monday.
