Annual Christmas parade is Saturday

Thursday, November 21, 2013

This year’s Martinsville-Henry County Christmas parade will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, bringing Santa Claus and the holiday season to the area.

Martinsville-Henry County Christmas Parade Association President Jeanne Lawson said the two-hour parade will “usher in the Christmas season for Martinsville and Henry County.” It will feature 140 entries.

Participants will follow the theme “O the lights are shining.” Lawson said this year’s grand marshals represent that theme.

The first grand marshal will be Gracie Agnew, the Magna Vista High School principal. She was named Outstanding Principal of Virginia by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.

The second grand marshal will be Henry County Teacher of the Year and District VI Teacher of the Year Trey Harris. Harris is the band director at Bassett High School. He also is the first area person chosen as a District VI winner, Lawson said.

“Since education is so important, what better way to represent ‘Oh let the light shine’ than to have educators represent” the theme, Lawson said. The pair will be the first official entries in the parade.

The vice president of entries for the parade association, Kathy Lawson, said the parade has “a good variety of entries this year, and it should be beautiful.”

Entries will feature motorcycles, dancers and the Martinsville, Magna Vista and Bassett high school marching bands, among other entertainment. Floats will be judged, and winners will be named the best in commercial, religious or nonprofit organization categories.

The parade will begin at the corner of Church and Clay streets. It will turn right onto Clay, left onto Main, right onto Bridge, left onto Fayette, left onto Moss and left onto Church, where it will end at the intersection with Ellsworth Street.

The free event will close multiple streets, including Market Street from Broad Street to Starling Avenue, and Cleveland Avenue. Attendees are asked not to park on any uptown streets and to make use of outlying parking or the Farmer’s Market lot or the Broad Street lot.

A rain date is set for 4 p.m. Sunday.
