Remains found in Henry ID'd as Bassett man
Tuesday, December 10, 2013
By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -
Remains found Thursday in Henry have been identified as those of Ricky Eugene Dodson of Bassett, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
Dodson was 53 when he last was seen in early October, around the same time that his friend, Vicky Harbour Purdy, 53, also of Bassett, last was seen.
Purdy’s remains were discovered Oct. 6 on Philpott Road in Franklin County, near the Henry County line. Her death was ruled a homicide.
Dodson was not considered a suspect, investigators have said.
Dodson’s remains were found within one mile of where Purdy’s vehicle was located with her remains inside, Franklin County Sheriff’s Lt. Philip Young said Monday.
Young said it would be “speculation” to comment on whether the two cases are linked, but both are under investigation.
The next step in the investigation into Dodson’s death is to determine how he died, Young said. The remains were sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke, so investigators are waiting on the lab’s determination on manner of death, Young said.
The lieutenant did not know how long that might take.
Dodson’s mother, Polly Dodson of Bassett, has said that Purdy and her son were friends. Polly Dodson told the Martinsville Bulletin over the weekend that she was “99 percent positive” that the remains were those of her son.
The last time she talked to her son was Oct. 3. She said he came to her house about 7 that night to ask about her daughter, who had surgery that morning.
A woman who answered the phone at Polly Dodson’s home on Monday and identified herself as Polly Dodson’s daughter said the family had no further comment.
