MHS band to play for McAuliffe
Patrick High School band also invited to inaugural parade
Sunday, December 22, 2013
The Martinsville High School marching band will be performing in the inaugural parade for Virginia’s 72nd governor, Terry McAuliffe.
“We will be traveling to Richmond on (Jan. 11) for the parade and are excited about representing Martinsville and Southside Virginia,” Kevin Lewis, MHS director of bands, stated in an email. “The inaugural committee searches for groups from throughout the commonwealth that have the talent and tradition to effectively celebrate the swearing in of Virginia’s newest governor.”
“The band boosters are helping with the cost of meals and charter buses for the day, which is well over $3,000. Donations from the community are welcome,” Lewis stated.
With a tradition of more than 65 years, the marching band averages 130 students and the band program consistently involves more than 20 percent of MHS students, he said.
The band program has received superior ratings in concert and jazz festivals in Universal Studios-Orlando (2006), Disney World (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012), Atlanta (2009 and 2013), Toronto (2002), Virginia Beach (2011) and Myrtle Beach (2005), according to Lewis.
The Bulldog Marching Band has performed the national anthem on televised national broadcasts for Fox, NBC and ESPN, and it performed in the 2006 inaugural parade for Gov. Tim Kaine in Williamsburg, Lewis said. The band has made two appearances in the Washington, D.C., St. Patrick’s Day Parade, where it was named best band in 2010.
The band is directed by Lewis, Brian Joyce, Michele Meyer and Shauna Hines, according to Lewis.
Patrick County High School’s marching band, called the Pride of Patrick County Marching Cougars, also has been invited to perform in the inaugural parade, according to a McAuliffe Inaugural Committee release Friday.
