Man dies after Nov. accident
Tuesday, December 31, 2013
A Bassett man who was involved in a three-car accident last month has died.
According to an obituary from Bassett Funeral Service, James Monroe Wright, 70, of Bassett, died Saturday at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The funeral home confirmed Monday that Wright was involved in an accident Nov. 11 on Virginia 57 and Mount Hermon Church Road.
According to police reports at the time, the other drivers involved included Henry County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Spencer of Horsepasture and Skyler Pevon Malddonado, then 23, of Collinsville.
According to previous reports, a 2001 Dodge Neon driven by Wright was stopped in the westbound lane of Virginia 57, attempting to make a left turn when it allegedly was struck by a 2000 Saturn four-door driven by Malddonado.
After the collision, the Neon crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a sheriff’s office vehicle driven by Spencer.
All three drivers were taken to Memorial Hospital in Martinsville for treatment. Wright later was flown to Roanoke Memorial, according to previous reports.
The trooper in charge of the investigation, Matthew Lovette, was not available Monday, said Virginia State Police Sgt. Robert Carpentieri.
The sergeant added that Malddonado has been charged with reckless driving in connection with the accident.
No further information was available Monday.
