Winter homeless shelter to open tonight

Monday, January 6, 2014

By BULLETIN STAFF REPORTS -

A winter homeless shelter will open tonight and Tuesday at the Salvation Army in Martinsville to give area residents a place to stay while temperatures plunge, according to a news release.

The shelter in the Salvation Army building at 603 S. Memorial Blvd. will open at 7 each night, the release said. It can accommodate up to 20 men.

Only men are being served because women can stay at Citizens Against Family Violence, officials said.

The shelter is being opened in a partnership between the Salvation Army and local churches, organizations and residents.

Organizers are looking for volunteers for each night and for prepared food donations. For more information, call Lt. Shauntrice Williams at 638-4093.
