BREAKING NEWS: Emergency shelter to open tonight
Wednesday, January 8, 2014
The emergency winter shelter at the Salvation Army will be open at 7 tonight to help people during the cold weather.
The low temperature tonight is expected to be around 20, according to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.
People wanting to stay at the shelter, located at the Salvation Army building at 6-3 Memorial Blvd., should arrive between 7 and 10 p.m., according to Michael Harrison, lead pastor at The Community Fellowship in Collinsville.
Hot meals will be provided in the evening and morning, and volunteers will staff the shelter, he said.
The shelter opened Monday night due to the cold, and Harrison said one person took advantage of it. No one used it Tuesday night, despite inquiries and people spreading the word, he added.
“I believe as we are consistent with the shelter, people will” use it more, he said.
If the shelter is closed, Harrison said officials can be contacted through the 911 center, the CONTACT telephone helpline, Martinsville Police Department and Henry County Sheriff’s Office and open the shelter if it is needed.
When the shelter is used due to cold weather, Harrison said both men and women can stay there. However, he said he also works with the Citizens Against Family Violence shelter to find appropriate housing.
