Virginia State Police Sgt. J. Michael Phillippi died early Saturday after he was found in a wrecked car on Chatham Road/Virginia 57, according to a state police news release.
According to the release, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 2:20 a.m. Saturday about an accident on Chatham Road/Virginia 57 about 170 feet west of Route 9728/Peverall Lane. When rescue crews arrived, they found a blue Chevrolet Impala crashed into a road sign and Phillippi seated inside, the release added.
State police were notified immediately and responded to the scene. Phillippi, 65, was taken to Martinsville Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later.
Phillippi was assigned to the Area 42 Office in Martinsville, which is part of the Virginia State Police Salem Division. He was working the overnight supervisory shift for the Salem Division at the time of his death.
Virginia 57 was reopened to through traffic shortly after 6 a.m. Saturday.
Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe held a moment of silence at the inaugural prayer breakfast in Richmond in honor of Phillipi, The Associated Press reported.
The State Police still are investigating the cause and circumstances of the sergeant’s crash.
