From Bulletin staff reports
A former Ridgeway woman died last week in Kentucky after she was shot with a crossbow in what authorities said may have been a murder-suicide.
According to a Taylor County (Ky.) Sheriff’s Office news release, Karyn Rae Meeks, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene by county coroners office personnel, as was Paul Dewayne Sprowles, 38, of Campbellsville, Ky.
Taylor County Sheriff Allen Newton told the Central Kentucky News-Journal that the incident is being investigated as a homicide and suicide.
The incident occurred on East Finley Ridge Road in Taylor County. According to the release, at about 10:50 a.m. Jan. 7, the sheriff’s office received a call from Roger Warren, who said that Meeks had been shot with a crossbow and was bleeding severely.
Investigators determined that Meeks and Sprowles had been living together and the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute, the release added.
The News-Journal identified Warren as Sprowles’ uncle and a witness to the incident. Newton told the newspaper that Warren is not considered a suspect.
A county sheriff’s deputy reported that while traveling to the scene of the incident, he spoke via telephone to Warren, who told him that Sprowles was armed with a shotgun, the release stated.
Deputies arrived at the scene at about 10:59 a.m. and found Sprowles dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the release stated.
The Martinsville Bulletin could not reach Newton for comment Monday.
According to a Community Funeral Service obituary, Meeks previously lived on Creek Way Trail in Ridgeway and was a nursing assistant with Stanleytown Rehab for more than 10 years. She most recently worked as a certified nursing assistant with the Loretto Motherhouse.
Survivors include her parents in California and Nevada, a husband and two sons of Ridgeway and other family members, the obituary shows.
