BREAKING NEWS: Morris resigns from Patrick County schools
Superintendent to remain on leave until Jan. 31
Thursday, January 16, 2014
Patrick County Schools Superintendent Roger Morris has resigned his position to retire for health reasons, effective Jan. 31.
The Patrick County School Board accepted his resignation and terms of an agreement with him Thursday following a closed session.
The vote was unanimous.
Morris will be on leave until Jan. 31, according to the motion approved by the board. He will be paid the salary would been paid from Feb. 1 until March 31 and for unused annual leave accrued through Jan. 31, the motion states.
Morris also will continue to receive health insurance through June 30.
Morris has been on medical leave since August. That leave initially was slated to expire Oct. 14 but had been extended through March 31.
Assistant Superintendent Dean Gilbert has been serving as the acting superintendent in Morris’ absence.
In July, the board voted to shave a year off of Morris’ contract with the division and moved up the contract’s expiration to June 30 of this year.
Morris and the school board have faced scrutiny and criticism after a change to a retired teachers’ incentive program, the results of a state Department of Education investigation last fall and the transfers of some staff that prompted allegations of retaliation. Five such allegations were determined to be founded following an investigation.
