Bassett man dies in accident
Thursday, January 23, 2014
An icy patch is believed to have caused a crash that killed a Bassett man Wednesday, according to a news release from the Virginia State Police.
Michael Lee Hopkins, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Virginia 687, about two-tenths of a mile west of Virginia 793 in Henry County, the release stated.
The preliminary investigation showed that a 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Virginia 687 when it hit an icy patch in the road around 11 a.m., the release stated.
That caused the vehicle to run off the left side of the road and travel down an embankment before striking a tree, the release stated.
Hopkins, who was driving the Explorer, was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, troopers stated.
Additional information about the crash was not available, but the investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
